Rum Dum Dum Dum

Keener, I love the passion. You said: “We won and they lost.”

Who is the “we” now? Is Senator Elect Bob Casey part of the we? His dad, the former governor of PA wasn’t part of the Clinton Dem’s version of “we” was he? There was no reason to reach out to a Dem who was a state politician, part of a dying unenlightened strain of the Democratic party. The quicker it dies out the faster people will ever remember it existed. The party position was clear in 1992 at the National level wasn’t it. There was no choice but CHOICE. We can’t have someone like that speak at the nominating convention. It was then that many long time Democrats ceased to recognize their own party. Times have changed.

Clinton’s former White House council Lanny Davis’ words, not mine: “We have found a great new center in the Democratic Party.” If the “we” includes this, the Dems have a chance at real inclusion, at not being so isolated.

My darling wife’s reaction to the Rummy news: “Halle-friggin-lujah!” I’m sure the Lord will forgive her. I bet even the Lord whose forgiveness is limitless is even saying “What took the dufus so long to dump this other dufus?!?!?”

I’m sure I have sinned.

To my friends who have worked for and supported some good Republicans who have lost a referendum which, in no small part, appears to have been a referendum on the pig-headed stay the course until we run off the cliff approach of the g bushy crew…

…I can only imagine your reaction to the removal of Rummy. You guys are probably going: “NOW YOU FIRE RUMSFELD YOU STUPID FUCK! NOW YOU FIRE HIM!!!! WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING YOU DOUCHE BAG!!!!!!”

Unlike our friend Keener, I have no concept of “we” or “they” in terms of party or ideology in America. There are plenty of fucknuggets on all sides. I’m glad I’m me. But I feel bad for an American political landscape littered with some good Republicans who lost local elections on an issue that had nothing to do with them. It’s like our stupid “advisory” ballot initiative about pulling the troops out of Iraq in an orderly but timely manner. No wonder Rumsfled got dumped. That thing one by like 4,000 votes in our county. The people have spoken!

On a positive note, Bill Gates should do a great job as Secretary of Defense. He’s finally in a position where he will do far less harm.

See, I can make a bad joke about Bill Gates and nothing will happen to my bloka98741-&^54

It's cyclical, at least that's Big Jim Thompson's message. They swept in on a wave, and were swept out in a wave.

No doubt the war (Mission Accomplished!) had a lot to do with it. But let's not forget the scandals, financial and page bending.

There was some confusion around the office yesterday about the timing of dumping Renfield. All I could muster yesterday was that R wants to get out before he can be investigated, because if charges are brought against him they would not be resolved in time for GB to pardon him on his way out.

The question remained: what does GB gain from dumping R right now? Then it came to me: methinks he struck a deal with Pelosi, as soon as the power shift became clear - I'll get rid of R tomorrow if you promise not to beat the drum of impeachment while I'm still around.

Does this strike you as a reasonable possibility?

jeanz (if I may) I don't think it's so extreme as a deal re: impeachment. The democrats would be fools to go that route. I think there's definitely a grain of truth to the first theory regarding investigations. More likely, Bush is saying "OK we'll try a different tack in Iraq." He could either be genuinely interested in doing so, but I doubt it. I think he's just hedging against low public opinion and making the guy most identified with the war fall on his sword.

Regarding this deal jeanz - it may sound reasonable from the perspective of the Dems - but what about the R's?!?!? Their peerless leader hung 'em out to dry. g bushy's disregard for members of his own party and their success or failure in Congress is (dare I say it) CLINTON-esque...I know many of my friends and e-friends long for the Clinton days - and there were things I liked about the guy and the times myself...but he fucked the D's - and left them in a state of fucked-up-edness for 12 YEARS!!!!...and the current president does more to save the D's than CLinton did (don't kid yourself about the importance of the CLinton experiences he is as relevant in politics today as a performance by Survivor at Cornfest...minus his work on Katrina, all praise for that)

Back to the 90's - With Clinton, I can understand why Newt was his best friend - Clinton had an election to win in '96. What the fuck was g bushy's reason for tanking the R's???? He's said himself he's not running for anything. It is absurd!

The guy g bushy picked is great for those who oppse the war from a variety of perspectives. He's been working behind-the-scenes with guys like Brent Scocroft - WHO HELPED RUN A SUCCESSFUL WAR IN THE REGION...on viable exit strategies that aren't "cut and run"

R incumbants who lost or won but now they've lost powers they once had must be beside themselves today. Bush fucked 'em in the goat ass. If I was an R I'd be soooo pissed off at the guy I wouldn't be able to see straight.

What a boob! And I oughta know because - I'm a boob!

edp, doesn't that make an even stronger case for GB fearing impeachment? I doubt any R would instigate, but if a D did, well, there may be enough Rs willing to return GB's favors. So GB might want to, shall we say, protect his borders.

Jeanz - not a bad point at all. He's not running for anything. The other side is, g bushy actually thinks history wil view him better if he pulls something off here with a D COngress.

Impeachment shouldn't even be on the table. There are lives in the balance, American, Iraqi a bunch of people in danger. While the Clinton impeachment was wasteful and pointless, politics wasn't about much during those 8 years. We were all relatively fat and happy. It's the old line from Nit: "In times of peace the warlike man attacks himself."

NOT THAT YOU SICK BASTARDS!

In times of war, the D's better just get g bushy to listen to the Baker-Hamilton suggestions. That's what many Americans want.

If any good has come out of this election - THAT IS IT. Not the Democrats agenda for America or their plan to get us out of Iraq. Their plan is let's listen to the voices of those who may know something about how to have an end strategy to a war in the middle east!

Oh, the other good is the D's are opening their tent...allowing people like me (neither D nor R) to see them, finally, as in step with the times - having room for a variety of different views.

You may be right about the threat of impeachment - but damn them if they go after the president at this point. He's gone in two years - his two main dickheads (Rummy and Rove) have been sufficiently slapped/rejected by the American people. Let's move the fuck on. Do something about the mess we've made in Iraq (if we can) and let Captain Kangaroo go back to Crawford at the end of his term.

By the way, you will here stuff about Gates' involvement with Iran/Contra in the 80's. Americans should not get their undies in a bunch about this. Compared to the prosecution of this war, Iran/Contra arms for hostages is an overwhelming policy success!!!!

The decision to dump Rummy was made several weeks ago. According to my friends in the White House (not Sheldon), Gates was offered the position last week.

What's killing the Rs in DC is that HE FUCKING WAITED until after the midterm to break the news. Karl Rove = political genius, my ass.

Agreed as to what the plan & desired outcome should be (Baker-H and all that). I certainly hope it goes that way.

One of my co-workers said the Ds took impeachment off the table 2 weeks ago. I don't know any more details than that - I'm just a cub reporter here.

See DC - that's what I was saying. This doesn't make any any sense...why would g bushy tank his own party? Is he that dumb? I'm not saying the R's would've won - but Rummy gone would've helped

Jeanz - I hope your coworker is right. It should be a Republican COngress that impeaches this dork.

the same thing happens to me when I tell jokes! Never knew it was a CIA thang.

Anyway, the region was safer with Hussien able to keep Iran in check. At least we found the terrorists if not the wmd's.

Hey Santi. My problem with the Iraq war is I think it distracted us for the more pressing American goal - not just smashing the Taliban in A-stan, but the capture of Osama Bin Missin'. The way those running the war did NOT allow our troups to move in to the mountain stronghold in between A-stan and P-stan but instead allowed the Northern Alliance to go in there (tras. let bin Laden escape) and then we spend all this time, blood and treasure to capture and sentence to death the Iraqi douche bag - it is enough to make a man go a bit bats.

I'm glad you decided to stop by the blog tho - strange, I'm listening to Mission of Burma right now - I think the first time you responded to an e-pissy question I put out there was a MoB live video question - pretty weird eh?

Rummy's no dummy. He's a very smart man and his vision for the military's future was timely.

His war planning was not.

I think the idea now is to get the Sunnis and Shiites fighting and to tip the balance of power eventually to the Iraqi Shiite clerics in Najaf as opposed to the Iranian Radical Shiites. The idea being that the more tradional Shia Muslims like al-Sistani recognize a kind of separation between church and state and would thus be amenable to some version of democracy, which would (eventually)get Iran back on course without some all-out invasion.

Quite the hail mary pass of a foreign policy.

SANTI!

or should I say SANNNNNNNTTTTIIIII!

Hey, glad I could be inspiration for this series of rants.

Regarding we won and they lost, I think during the campaign I really got to undersatnd the mechanics of party power in the legislative branch, particularly the House. Amazing you can go through high school and no one mentions the rules committee to you, or that there is not a single democrat on the conference committee, etc.

So by THEY I do mean the power structure that exists outside the realm of independent members, a structure which has over the past 6 or so years consistently eroded our liberties, impoverished the middle and lower class to enrich the wealthy, and equated questioning the war with treason.

To me that is a fairly definable "They", in that I know what that system had in store for us the next 6 years if we didn't dismantle it.

"We" is actually harder, because until Tuesday "we" were just the people trying to dismantle "they". Now it becomes more difficult.

But I think there is more common ground than there was a decade ago. I defined it in my blog as:

1. In governmental policy, Anti-authoritarianism
2. In foreign affairs, Ethical Realism
3. In domestic affairs, Economic Populism

That's the new ones at least, and providing they are smart about the economic part and not knee-jerk Buchana-cons, I'll throw my hat in with them for the time being.

But can I just end with this?

SAANNNNNNNTTTTTTTTIIIIIIIIIIII!

Overall, the BoE figures revealed that the number of loans approved in March was far below the high point reached in late 2003. Back then about 130,000 mortgages a month were being approved.
The figures also revealed an unexpected surge in consumer credit during March.
