Alexander the Greatest

5 years ago today my kid was born. Sorry I can’t make practice tonight Century of Progress guys. We’ll get back on the stick next week. I’ve got some stuff to say about the record we’re doing, I think I finally have some sense of what songs might go together. I’ll either put them up here or on the Century of Progress blog.

The day before Alex was born, I wrote him a letter in my journal. I read it every year on his birthday, at least to myself. I don’t have too many important thoughts, but this letter contains things I need to remember:

Thursday April 19, 2001

Alex, we’re waiting for you little buddy. I pray that your mom is healthy and will make it through this experience, and I pray the same for you. I pray that I will always remember the love and concern I have for your well-being as long as I know you. Son, I’m sure we’re going to have our problems as all families do. It’s my great hope that if and when I get angry with you that my anger will be tempered by the love and concern I feel for you now when you are so fragile. I also hope that when you are angry and frustrated with me, you know that your father is and will always be a man who loves you and cares for your well-being and humanity.

Your mother and I love you deeply son. Be safe, be healthy, be Alex.

Happy Birthday Alex! It is probably a great disservice to you that I think of you as the "Boogah! No Boogah!" kid.

Looking forward to celebrating with the little man!! Aaarrr!!

And getting a bit choked up too. The last part of your letter is pretty much a talk I have with my son at least twice a week.

The boogah no boogah thing is really cool. I'm not sure if he remembers it - but that was some hilarious shit.

Alex is a great little kid. You and KJ are great parents. That equals a great family. Me and Steener are big fans.

As for the P Dawg's kid, he's alright, too, even though he punched me in the nuts the last time I saw him! P Dawg, did you put him up to that?

Happy Birthday, Alex!

I wonder what kind of embarrassing photo will end up on the Gunderpage....

I think the first birthday I remember is turning 5. My dad called me an old lady and for some reason it made me feel buckets 'n buckets o' love from him. I just couldn't stop smiling.

Thanks ChrisB. I owe it all to his mother. She's always loved spidermen and drummers.

5 is the best age ever, good for him. My little man Cole turns 6 tomorrow. Ed, I saw you big pimpin' in the ol' Saturn wagon at lunch. What are you rollin' on, 18s?

It's slightly less cool than the Saturn Wagon...it's the Ford Focus wagon.

Happy birthday to Cole. That little dude rocks. I still remember going to the Kane County Cougars game with him. Rock on family of sultan of swaff

Name the game and I'm there. I love the Cougars. Make it a night when Birdzerk is there and the kids can run the bases. I'll take out a second mortgage so I can splurge on a couple hot dogs. Are you signing Alex up for T-ball this season? Dennis and I are coaching (babysitting) a team. His kid Finn is 5 too. You can request a team when you sign up, so if you want us stunting his career, write our name on the app. Mark, you too. Don't let your kid be one of those jags who takes karate.

T ball would bleepin rule!!!! I'll check with the tower. I'm gonna end up working until six most of the summer, bt we'll see. I hope Alex loves baseball (re of whether he excells in it or not). We singed him up for bitty basketball at the Y. We love the Y, but the boy needed a bit more direction. It'd be good to know his coaches- and I know you guys know what the hell you're doing.

Thanks for the heads up.

Ed, you had the foresight to write a letter to your son the night before the birth, which makes you a genius. And it's a good letter, which makes you poetic.

Me, I think I might have scrawled somewhere -- "K--, I hope you come out soon, because your mother is exhausted and ready to kill someone. And I'm afraid it might be me."

Really nice letter Ed.

Thanks for the kind words...

and Trendite, regarding the letter and the timeliness of its composition - I was about to become a parent, I was in trouble and I knew it.

I just did what I always do when I'm in trouble.

I write.

Who knew it would be this much fun being a parent? It's an excuse to be a big kid and see the world new all over again.
