Final Thoughts on AJ from Yesterday

The AJ quotes were great from after the game. Someone asked him how it felt to be Public Enemy #1 for the Cubs...

AJ: "I thought that was the goat? Does this mean I'm the new Bartman? I don't know what I did to them. I didn't cost them the World Series or anything."

When he was asked about the garbage thrown on the field he gave the standard answer, but at the end he added "I'll probably get fined for inciting the crowd."

Finally, the best part of all this stuff is I got to teach Alex an important lesson about sports. He would always ask me why Michael Barrett punched AJ in the face. After we watched the replay of AJ hitting the home run, I got to use one of the best players from my favorite team to say: "This is how you get someone back in baseball. You don't throw the ball at them and you don't even have to punch back. AJ got back at Barrett by winning the game with a home run. That's better than fighting back, rushing the mound or anything that leads your fellow players to have to fight with you, get hurt and suspended. This home run hurts Barrett and the Cubs more than any punch in the face."

I think Alex got it, especially when we watched the Dempster interview (who talked alot of junk about AJ, the SOX, and even helped to get Joey Cora suspended after the first series) Alex said: "AJ must have hurt the Cubs. That guy looks like he's crying."

Crying in baseball?

"That's a lesson for another day son."

Should be a good game today. Z might be (for the moment) the best pitcher in town. Contreras hasn't lost a game in a year - but he's had a lot of help. Jose should NOT be the starting pitcher in the All Star Game. He needs some rest for his hip. That guy could be 50 years old for all we know. But Z is going up against #56, the coolest baseball player in recent Chicago memory. I used to think Gracie was the real life Bull Durham, plus he was a smoker. So cool. Then I found out what a clubhouse lawyer he was and throwing Sammy under the bus years after the fact. Grace is best left forgotten as well for doing that.

#56 may be overmatched stuffwise, but he's always capable of greatness. Isn't greatness greater than stuff? Down 7 runs against the twinkies...to be able to keep himself and his team in the game and come back and win - Phew. It would be awesome to see Brls stare down Zambranozilla today and come out with a win.

Great job by the baseball Zeus having Dusty on the show. MichaelK and other Cubs fans I've talked to are right about Dusty. He can be a classy guy (in spite of his who plays better when it is hot theory). Like Ozzie, it is sad that baseball men can become so insulated that they don't understand how their public statements can offend people.

Dusty took the heat this morning on the radio. He stood up. I felt sort of sorry for him. Part of me hopes that somehow he can survive all this.

Doesn't look like that's gonna happen.

Sorry,
I didn't mean to be a snot. It's just been a long time since we've had a good inning like that.

Nothing worse than a sore winner, especially since we'll probably find a way to blow it all anyhow!

Dude your team broke through! Be happy, baseball should be fun and evoke helllll yeah moments. There is so much failure for all teams to sit through. Celebrate the good ones!

Your team actually played two good games this weekend...there was just a collapse by one guy yesterday

Tigers won too so the SOX lost the one game they picked up yesterday.

If only we had 8 Zambranos and 1 Derek Lee (and 0 Dusty Bakers), we'd rule. And dude, stop defending AJ. He's a prick just like your manager. He smacked home plate in another catcher's face which is the baseball equivalent of pulling a sharpie out of your sock to sign the ball. I love you, hate your team.

and smacking home plate deserves a punch in the face? Barrett is a bigger prick and a loser. He fought with Oswalt and the g bushy look alike and his team went on to eliminate and leave the Cubs in the dust last year.

What happened after the fight? - the Gooch (not Michael K) hit a grand slam home run.

If Barrett didn't like it he'd be better off trying to win the game rather than punch someone in the face. That is being a prick.

I love you, and don't hate your team. I hate the ownership and what the franchise stands for is a joke. I can't believe you defended Rodman who was the biggest asshole (he dared to hit Michael Jordan) and was far more worthless (ok, I can't write a damned thing) than AJ. AJ is one of the best catchers in the league (offensively and defensively - he's batting .320 for fuck sake)....

and after getting punched in the face he came back a couple of weeks later and did this. I think he's a great example of how you get revenge in sports.

I won't defend the things Ozzie said. I am very sad about this. Ozzie could make pitching and defense be exciting and spirited. I hope he learns something from all this. I hope Ozzie takes up Mr. Dobsson's invitation to get more involved in the gay community.

Ozzie and AJ are good baseball men. I think that (minus Ozzie using derrogatory terms) they can represent baseball played the right way.

I won't defend Ozzie (although I hope he learns something and not just political crap, but really learns that he can hurt people)...

but c'mon after all this shit has happened, for AJ to make the comment about "inciting the crowd" and to hit that home run at that moment...it was fantastic for me. This team really is the most exciting I've ever followed...I wish you didn't hate the SOX. I think they've been pretty cool to the Cubs. No purpose pitches, no horseshit in the media. They just came out, played baseball and never quit.

I'm in a bit of a foul mood since the SOX lost (to the Cubs) the Tigers won, the Redsox won and the fucking Yankees are winning.

A big part of me says I should probably shut up about the SOX. I should thank my stars and garters that they were the ones who broke through and won the WS first. If the Cubs had done it, it would've been night night for the franchise that I have loved since I was 4.

Well, someone had to punch MJ... I don't recall defending Rodman, but I love punching. I think punching is the great American passtime. As a matter of fact, I'm hoping we move to a punch-based economy. Instead of paying for a candy bar, the cashier would get to punch you. The more expensive an item, the more the sales person gets to punch you. I wish we were already in that economy, because we have to return a baby seat today...

That shift would certainly get me to stop eating candy bars. The guys and gals at my local White Hen look like they can kick my ass.

Does that mean the richest sons of bitches in America would look like Gerry Cooney?

#56 didn't look so hot out there. He may not have the best stuff, but he eats innings and that's huge for a starting pitcher. I'm not sure he should be an allstar, but Jose - definitely.

P.S. I don't really hate your team. Just a handful of the non-gracious fans - the "The Cubs are my second favorite team behind every other team" types... Smooches.

More smootches back at you.

Someone's gonna tell us to get a room.

Can we get a room?
