What Rocks?
I love my coworkers. That should always be a given here. Very few of them know about the blog – but my love for my fellow helpers is real not bullshit. I look forward to going to that place everyday.
One of my favorite coworkers and I have had a sort of ongoing…um, debate is not the right word. There is no question and no debate in her mind. I’m not necessarily even arguing with her about this. I guess I’m carrying on the conversation – solo, in my head.
Apparently I am more messed up than I thought.
There was an order for a Thomas Lee last week and I said “Praise the Lord, the poor bastard is getting a hearing aid. He will finally realize how much he sucks.”
My coworker expressed her shock: “You don’t like the Crue?”
Uh oh, don’t want to offend anyone so I told part of the truth “I saw them on the Theatre of Pain tour.”
The part I didn’t tell was how it was as bad as the time I saw Genesis because of a girl.
Pathetic
She said: “And you didn’t think it was one of the best shows you ever saw? I put the Crue only second behind the Rolling Stones.”
I couldn’t really pick the right half of the truth anymore so I just said “Ya know there was really nothing about the hair bands I liked and really that’s all they were right? I thought all of them sucked. If you spend that much time with the Aqua-Net you are probably covering up the fact that you suck right?”
“Sure,” she said, “and I was mad when Brett Michael’s hair looked prettier than mine. But the Crue was more than that.”
I dunno.
A few days later the song Don’t Stop Believing by Journey came on the We Play Anything radio station and the same coworker said “This is such a wussy song. I can’t believe your Sox chose it.”
Now my friend is a cub fan (as are most of my friends). Hey I am a sort of evidence as to why cubs fans have bad judgment in general since many of them choose to be friends with me.
But her cub fandom was not the reason why she did not like the Journey song. She said “That high pitch squealing and wussy light rock, it sounds like a bunch of dorks made the song.”
Today Same Old Situation came on the We Play Anything station. My coworker rocked out within the confines of the workplace and she seemed sufficiently happy with the whole experience.
I am always in favor or people rocking out. I have a lot of records good and bad that make me feel good. But I kept thinking of her disdain for the Journey song…and to be honest – I can’t tell the difference (wussiness-wise) between Journey and Motley Crue. There's some high pitch squealing and it sounds like lite-rock. By the way I am not deliberately omitting umlauts as a way of showing some disrespect to Motley Crue. I just don’t know how to make the blog umlautify words.
Somebody set me straight here. Am I wrong thinking there is no discernable difference between the Crue and the Journey – are they both full on bags of powdery-puss or am I missing something in the aesthetic or execution that would help me discriminate between the two musical groups?
Help me blog-0-sphere, you are the only one I trust.

I'm with you. And if I may be so bold, I'd toss REO on the heap, too. Of course, my musicial knowledge stands at about 1/2 on yer standard 10-scale, so pay me no mind. As proof: I very happily had Sweet Jane stuck in my head this morning.
Dude, if I get Journey stuck in my head now because of this, I'm gonna be pissed.
I have no idea. What tastes worse - lima beans or pinto beans?
Second only to the Stones? I think Crue is probably down there below Bill Wyman's solo career (Je Suis un Rock Star).
There's no accounting for taste. No matter how...awful a song or band is, there will always be someone who completely identifies with it.
Truth be told, I had an Olivia Newton John song come on my MP3 player yesterday and didn't skip it.
Thanks, Khyle, you made me feel SO much better about Sweet Jane.
Oh - and, hi, Khyle! I read all your archives. Nice job. Glad to know you're well.
According to my high school aesthetic, I've always thought that wussiness could be measured in how frequently a synthesizer was used, and how many ballads the band did. So Journey wins the wussstakes.
Steve Perry's "Sweet Jane" is pretty cool, but his "Venus in Furs" is definitive.
you are wrong. Crue's first album "Too Fast for Love" is a great raw LA rock album. "Shout at the Devil" has some good tracks. After that, yes, they became utterly lame. You should also read "The Dirt" for a killer rock story.
Sorry, all.... let me say a few things about Tommy Lee.... 1. Pamela Anderson..'nuf said.... 2. I watched him half of the summer on Rockstar Supernova (a friend of ours was a contestant--- definitely a WTF moment there.... that's definitely not her scene, but free publicity I suppose) and that man is a tatooed hormone on legs. Is there anything else going on in there? All the other guys commented on the presentation. Him---the state of undress, the provocativeness of their movements, etc 3. But then I saw him playing drums a number of times with the house band and then his new band... and, well, he's a good drummer. And he loves what he does. The rest of the Crue? Don't know. I agree with Ed--- Crue was one of the original hair bands. Is their music fun? Heck yeah. Is it good? well, that's up the the individual listener
Does your co-worker pal like NASCAR?
Yes she likes NASCAR - she knows a lot about all sports.
hmmm doesn't surprise me a bit that she'd like nascar... is her vehicle a jacked up pick up whose color could best be described as "primer"?
No no this gal is cool. She likes NASCAR but she follows all sports. I work with some pretty cool people. They're certainly a lot nicer than some of the tools I've had to deal with at the U
It's actually a question of musical spectrum to me: if she'd said "I like Crüe second only to..." John Zorn, or Rachmananov, or Lionel Hampton, I'd be all, "Huh?!?" But, no offense to the Stones, who's the Godfather of preeny, primpy rock? Actually, it's probably Bowie, but I'm guessing his music is a little too weird for her. So, the next best is... Mick.
I'm with Tom and your co-worker. Forget semantics, Crüe rocks. (Ok, they got lame by the end of the run, but who doesn't)
Incidentally, to create the umlautted "u", hold down the Alt key and type 0252. It will magically appear.
There was a streak of bands that get judged unfairly by their mainstream breakthrough records. Crüe is one example, Guns and Roses, Def Leppard, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Scorpions and Queensryche all come to mind. Ok, the last two might be a stretch, but in all of these cases, the record(s) immediately preceding the big hit record was (were) awesome.
You with me T.O.?
hell yeah. check out the REALLY old scorpions. it's nothing like their pop stuff.
you can throw metallica in there too.
Scorpions were awesome. Loved the shorts they had.... most of my friends in HS got in trouble for wearing those scantily clad gals printed on them....
whoops, that was supposed to say SHIRTS.... they had shirts with scantily clad (often exposed) women on the fronts.....
Look at the passion for the Crue conversation. Chris talked about unfair lumping - like reducing bands to their most successful end stage...this is not the unfair lumping I did with the crue and all the bands Chris mentioned (with the exception of Guns 'n Roses)...I dismissed all those bands in the 80's because they were rock bands of the 80's.
I just did not understand rock music in the 80's which explains why I followed my Cousin Mike's lead and did the floatingBasement. Part of what fueled me is musical revenge against the hair and my perception of what lay behind the hair.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm serious when I say that I'll listen to Too Fast For Love without prejudice...maybe I'll find a gem I missed
Nothing on it sounds like Kick Start My Heart does it?
you're thinking about it too much. go out in your backyard, take off your shirt, drink a 12er of busch and crank early crue.
do it now!
Thanks alot Tom. Now I'm cold and I'm drunk.
Aw hell, at least I'm drunk.
The Crue beat there wives.
Actually it was about 50/50, some of the guys in the Crue beat their wives the other half go beaten by their wives so it works out.
