Ye Olde Syntaxe Ere O'er

Newman is hosting the C.S. Lewis flick at the State Street Theater in Sycamore…I think they said the showing is on Thursday. I want to go. Monsignor Nelson said he hasn’t been to the movie theater in Sycamore. After Mass I told him:

“You’ll love the Sycamore Theater. It’s one of those old time movie theaters, from the movies.”

He laughed, but secretly he’s hoping jokes like that’ll land me in the Lake of Fire. Oooh, if I can invent a really spicy tasting butter I can call it Land o’Lakes of Fire…(or would it be o’Fire?). What’s the o’ grammar rule? If you have one o’ you must have a second? Aye before o’ except after methinks?

Part II: BEAR WEATHER FANS

I pretend to know stuff about philosophy, religion, politics, music etc…but there’s nothing I pretend to know more about than sports – so take this with a tab of acid (o’ acid?) I don’t want to hear any more garbage about Bear weather. The Bears do not play any better in the snow or in the cold. Here’s what determines how the Bears will do: how good is their opponent? Also, how smart is their opponent? Carolina, Tampa Bay, Green Bay all had success running the ball against the Bears. Then for some reason, at some point in the game – they all stopped running the ball. I guess they were tired of all the success they were having getting the Bears to over pursue up the field whatever…Bill Cowguy – he’s got more brains in his chin than Mike Sherman has in his you know what…

Hell I could’ve figured it out – after starting the game off with some misdirection – the Bears strengths (pursuit – flying to where the ball is – or where they think it is)…were used against them. They didn’t miss tackles because they didn’t feel like tackling. They were off kilter. It wasn’t that the Steelers “wanted it more” or any crap like that – you don’t fly all the way to Pittsburgh to have someone kick your ass! The early running attack set the stage for everything that followed. The Bears couldn’t commit to playing the type of defense they are used to because of all the misdirection early on. It was so simple – and Vinny the Chin remembered: “When we run the ball, we gain yards and we don’t give the Bears defense a chance to intercept passes and score touchdowns. Maybe we should keep running the ball.”

No need to give up on the Bears. They are still a fun team to watch. But I will pretend to know more about Bears football than the idiots who say: “’Dis is Bear wedder. Da Bears! Da snow!” I also would like to think that I know how the other teams screwed up, how the Steelers got it right – I don’t know how to fix the Bears few minor problems. But that’s not my job. My job is to watch the games and drink a beer here and there. That’s it.

Football strategy, of course, is not as simple as I presented it above. But the Steelers plan (and I am not a fan of their team I don’t care about them one way or another) worked, and as long as it kept working – why change it?

If I ever come up with a plan that works in this life – you bet your sweet ass I’m sticking with it.

They exploited the Bears defense pretty well. Tampa Bay did, too, but too late in that game. The Steelers were ready, and they can do pretty well running the ball. Keep in mind the Bears are without their two starting safetys (Mike Brown is an awesome player)--I think they are having a hard time making adjustments in their assignments. Their backups are really good, too, but maybe just not quite there.

Call me crazy, but what's wrong with having Orton run the ball himself every now and then in those 3rd down situations? If their pass coverage is so good, "suggest" to Orton to run it. Yeah it's a bit desperate, but the Bears' offense IS desperate. THEY DO NOT PRODUCE TOUCHDOWNS. I don't know the stats but out of the points their kicker or their defense did not score, I bet the majority of those the offense scored after great field position bequeefed to them on a silver platter by the defense. That's embarrassing! So that's why I say give me a break with this "dance with the Orton that brung ya" talk. He didn't brung ya nowhere--he just isn't as bad as McNown, that's all.

Of course I was saying the same carp about Jim Miller, but they didn't have anyone "better."

"Bears wedder:" I love how you get teamfuls of guys from Florida, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, etc.--and then talk about them like dere guyss who grew up over by dere at Pulaski and Irving dere. Right. And Notre Dame's precious widdle teams are "Irish," too.

Right. Urlacher is from New Mexico.

I agree with running Orton. What I don't understand is that we have two great running backs and competent receiver tight ends and we're still trying to throw long passes. I'm sure Muhsin has something to say about it (0/0 last week) but I think we should be running on 70% of plays and throwing short passes for the other 30%. The opposing defense knows it's coming, but we don't have surprises to use. And we can run the ball!

I'm hoping we see the Bears looking like the Falcons offense today. Multiple ground attacks. Shock and awe, baby!!
