Privatized Parts
In one of the best short sighted plans (if such a thing is possible) in the history of the State of Illinois – Blaggo (he can feel free to call me Bloggo) is planning to:
a.) Privatize at least part of the state’s lottery
b.) Possibly privatize the toll authority/road/system/whatever
This has yet to be officially officially announced as far as I understand it. Both are part of the Governor’s secret education plan. I love living in a state that has a secret education plan.
You know it’s got to be good if members of the Republican minority were basically locked out of the decision making process. In my limited ability to read between the lines in politics – locking out the minority is one way of saying: ‘We are going to take all the credit for this, and you can’t say shit.’ I don’t really care much about this except to say it’s sort of sad.
But to those members of the State Leg and Senate from the ‘burbs who are arguing that the ‘burbs should get a greater share of the windfall from the initial privatization of the toll roads let me say – shame on you, you shameless fucks.
Everybody knows that I don’t give a fuck about the redistribution of wealth unless it’s through the Holy Church – and even there it is not a primary concern of mine…the church as agent for social/financial change comes far down on the list of important things it is charged with in my feeble brain. I believe government as an institution is even less qualified to do such stuff – but to those who argue publicly that commuters from the ‘burbs must get a disproportionate share (in their minds the appropriate share) of the money because they have paid for the toll roads with their nickels, dimes, quarters and now credit cards over the years – again, shame on you, you shameless fucks.
If you live in a moderately affluent to affluent affluent Northwest suburb you will ALWAYS have a greater share of property taxes to draw from to pay for educational programs. Your schools will always be funded more than those elsewhere in the state. I’m fine with that. Life isn’t fair and government is not there to make it so. You can pass a $2 million referendum to pay for more free Kleenexes (Kleenexes, in my spell check by the way) at the public library’s atrium to wipe away the tears from this tragedy.
While I was proud to support Glen P. in his bid for Gov a few years back, one thing I disagreed with was his plan to redistribute state property taxes evenly. I think there is something to the argument that those who pay this amount may be able to reap certain benefits within their community. But this other shameless fuckery….Fuck. If b.) is really part of the Gov’s plan – this may be one chance for schools in southern and western Illinois – as well as in the Big City to get a BIG little something extra…distributed equally. Fuck you if you live in Something Heights and think your commute should give you more of this too. You certainly paid more over the years for these roads. Thank you. But as we have agreed above, life isn’t fair – so shut the hell up.

But how will Lake Forest sponsor it's lacrosse team?
I am so happy about this. I grrew up in a poor school district and it keeps getting poorer. This kind of legislation could really help.
Reps in and around Will Co. are talking about the need to widen I-55. It's become a death trap due in part to sprawl. Schools are busting at the seams thanks to sprawl. Why do these same reps seem to encourage sprawl?
I went thru downstate Pittsfield IL some years back - the place is nearly a ghost town. The students there definitely need some help.
amen eh.
Damn, Ed. You sound like one of those cranks who sit in traffic every day on the Ike listening to Don and Roma. Looks like there are two issues; sprawl, and education funding. As for sprawl, to me it seems like people are chasing affordable housing west and sacrificing their free time for long commutes. As for education, I'm all for redistributing the wealth a bit, but I believe the main determinant in a school's success (assuming the $$ per child is relatively equal) is how involved the parents are. The good schools have it, the bad ones don't.
No doubt SoS. Parents are key - education as an institution and $$ as the fuel have certain limits. I just think that in this case - with the roads...the people representing the burbs need to shut the hell up if they think they're getting a greater share of the funds (that's if this plan goes through). And the good schools will always...and maybe should always have the greater $$ cuz the home owners pay more...what's the old saying "Ya get what you..."
It is my hope that these state Leg and Senators who are arguing on behalf of the burbs are just R's who were shut out of the decision making process here and have sour grapse. That I can understand. Politically, if you're not going to get credit for the ting - you should probably try to trash it anyway you can. From that perspective - well...I hope that's all there is.
Peaceout.
Who are Don and Roma?
I meant to put "" around the "good" schools. I know two wonderful women (one of whom is my wife) and the other of whom will kick my ass - if I don't say that these professional educators work in good schools that may in fact be underfunded. So ladies, I didn't mean to say that your repsective schools are not goood because they don't get Barrington type money.

The reason the NW burbies pay so much for the toll roads is that THEY USE THEM. Ergo, THEY BREAK THEM. Mr. and Mrs. Belleville do not frequent I-294 with their Hummers, and thus should not be expected to pony up for its potholes. And, if they do drive on it, it costs them twice as much because they don't have the pass.
I would love to see the following taxes implemented to fund the balancing of *all* state schools: premium food/bev (think Starbuck's) and restaurants; landscape services; and, most especially, nannies. If you already pay someone else to raise your child, then you would likely not notice paying a little extra to educate someone else's child.
While I'm on the subject, I have to mention that I have a real problem with the tax deductions for children. That really needs to be abolished. And why couldn't that extra money be applied to schools? It would be the one stream of income that would actually flow logically from source to recipient! You have a child who needs to be educated? Great, we'll take the money we used to give you in tax credits and apply it to your kid's school!
Is it clear to everyone that I'm just pissed about EVERYTHING being paid for by my cigarettes?
Jeanz, I love this:
"especially, nannies. If you already pay someone else to raise your child, then you would likely not notice paying a little extra to educate someone else's child."
I don't hate the rich or anything - but this is some funny shit.
Jeanz, you smoke? You must be a millionaire.
Well, I was once, but that was before the last buck-a-pack hike. Now I'm a hundredthousandaire. I won't even have enough to buy my own iron lung - I'll have to get on a buddy program. Isn't it the saddest tale you ever heard?
Oy.
I agree with everything you say, ED. (by the way, am I the other teacher who will kick your ass? If not, I still will!)
All I can say is that the low-preforming schools (like mine) are in a cycle of doom. We are expected to spend the money that we do get on programs we do not choose (thanks No Child Left Behind). We are forced, yes forced, to spend extra time each day to coach students in the upper percentile who will hopefully raise our scores. This needs to be documented & we have to have special lesson plans for it. When you ask, "But what about the students that can't read (in 3rd grade), " we're told there's nothing we can do...they won't help our scores anyhow.
It's true about the parents. Good parents (generally speaking) = good schools. We lost part of our spending because our attendance was 91% last year. Now it's our job as teachers to make sure the kids come, including calling each student (on our 15 min lunch) who is absent each day. This must also be documented.
I've got nothing against raising kids in good school districts; I plan on doing the same. But if they think the kids in Naperville & my students have the same chance on state tests...it's ridiculous. Regardless of school spending. I can't even charge $1.50 to go on a field trip because half of my class won't be able to go. If anything I think low-performing schools need more money per student, and I will still say that even when my child attends a "good" school.
People that think they deserve a bigger piece of the pie because they decide to live outside the city is silly. Blago is silly. He was sitting at the table next to us when we were out for Devin's b-day. We heard him say, "I'm cleanin' up the classrooms!" in his little elf-like voice. It was all I could not to punch him.
Oh,and don't ask who Don & Roma are. You don't want to know...
Ms. k-conflict, you of course were the other teacher in question. And I think you make some good points here...Blagoo may - in general be silly - esp. when he and others in the State Leg decided to skip a year funding the TRS...I thought that would be a good year not to pay my state income tax.
I'm glad you understood the connotation of "good" school - I really believe teaching is a calling - an individual's calling...and an individual can do a lot of good no matter what the setting.
Whatever the merits of the Blaggo plan - it will not end the "cycle of doom" - but for cripes sake - let's just once give everyone a bump across the board. It's like the old chicken soup theory - 'What could it hurt?'
Do you think after the next press conference, Blaggo will slap the podium?
Oh wait, he's a cubs fan...he'll probably slug Judiii Rosannne Barr Tiddliewinka
The bulk of the money generated on the tollways is from people who live in the 'burbs driving into the city to work. They are already siphoning money out of the city system, driving up the price of gas, and destroying the environment. The least they can do is let us keep whatever small portion of the 80 freakin' cents that gets beeped off their iPass each day...
Not to mention generally annoying everyone asking for directions to the Rainforest Cafe.
Does anyone ever go to such a place...and why isn't that rainforest threatened?
Can I point out that many of the NW Suburbs are in Cook county along with Chicago?
If you look at Google maps (true dat) in the map view, then the satellite view, you can clearly see the density of the sprawl. Cook County has ALL of the tollways (and freeways) in it at some point where most of the other counties have few or none.
Teachers rule. Go Bears.
It seems like that dichotomy exists in schools on a number of levels. The remedial classes tend to be taught by teachers with no tenure or issues of some sort and the A.P. classes are coveted. While any student would benefit from a good teacher, good students are more likely to learn from any teacher, while B.D. kids or just kids with average intelligence likely need a good, talented teacher to get something from the class.
I think the last part of Chris' remarks really peaked my interest. Maybe to take things a step further - the "good" or advanced students tend to find their most rewarding experiences outside of the classroom as they are self-motivated and we all know that intellectual interest cannot always be directed by an institution or even a highly qualified professional teacher...sometimes human curiosity points us in our own direction.
I have to poop.
