Dick Ed and Cub Girl

Thank you SOX fans and Cub players for punching AJ.

In an effort to demonstrate something like objectivity before I tell the story I’m about to tell, remember I was the one who told the story about AJ stepping on one of the Boone brothers as he rounded third last year. I will also admit that there has to be a reason why he is involved with all of these messes. I would still argue that nothing AJ has done is worse from a baseball perspective than Sammy’s hop or the kisses, especially when most of the homers he hit were when the Cubs were up 5 or down 8 (usually down 8). I will agree with part of what my dear friend bigSoda said that the guy is a prick. But I think intelligent Cubs fans (bigSoda and all of the Cub fan readers of this blog fit that category) will agree that the Sammy days are not thought of fondly…and in a way that guy might even be worse. He pretended to be cuddly and lubbie dubbie but he was even an unbearable prick to his teammates (see any interview by Gracie from the last 3 years).

Although I think Barrett is a bigger tool (and definitely a coward to sucker punch someone) and an inferior catcher, I can agree with Cubs fans who have posted that AJ is a burr in their saddle and there’s some reason for that.

Having said ALL that, I am giddy that for the second year in a row SOX fans have won the MLB write-in contest for the AllStar game. Don’t get me wrong, the more WhiteSOX that stay home and rest for the second half the better – but just that the passion has been their from the fan base for the past two years. And please, in the name of objectivity, resist posting comments that SOX fans are just assholes who like this big asshole because I would again point to the aggressive face puncher, the Hopper and the guy who does the John Travolta finger point up to heaven even when he strikes out the pitcher. Why doesn’t somebody punch him? He does that shit after every strike out? Why isn’t that worse than slapping the plate once?

Oh, it’s not just WhiteSOX getting all testosterone-y for AJ because we did the same thing for Podz last year – and that guy is a supermodel dating, Peter Pan looking, pitter-pattering weirdo. I love the enthusiasm among fans of my favorite franchise. As bitter and twisted as WE have been (brooding sulks compared to the warm ball of joy that has been Wrigley for most of my life) – SOX fans and marketing (thank you Brooks B.) have exhibited an unbridled sense of fun with these past two write-in campaigns, especially this one. It was good to see fans at the game last night, looking happy with their I PUNCHED AJ signs. By the way, I punched AJ 25 times each from 5 different computers under 5 different e-identities. SOX fan math, well I don’t know how many that adds up to since counting on all my fingers, toes and testicles I only get to 12. I’ll just say 12.

Even the beloved owner of the SOX (who for years wasn’t even beliked by me) wore his Punch AJ shirt proudly in the past few days. The Cubs are still the more popular team and more important culturally to Chicago. I won’t deny that. But the fact that SOX fans and the franchise can turn this shit with Barrett from something ugly to something joyful says a lot to me. In this spirit these will be my last negative comments about Blue Number 8…although the other day I told Alex that the Cubs catcher should be Number 0. But if a bunch of mullet wearing Alsip-ians can forgive and laugh and punch AJ (many of those people had to buy their first computer just to vote) I can laugh too, at the situation at fans on both sides of town, at AJ (because he teammates in interviews seem to take exceptional joy in saying they have punched AJ recently), and mostly just laugh and enjoy the fun of baseball. It has never been more fun being a fan of the SOX and quite frankly I don’t see how it can get any better on that front.

As much of a jerk that AJ might be, that’s how good of a guy Jim Thome seems to be. Even though the reality hit him that he couldn’t come back to play for his favorite team from childhood (the Cubs, JT is more effective as a DH than as an everyday 1st baseman) Thome has embraced playing for the SOX and from all reports he is one of the best things to ever happen to that clubhouse. Of course I would not be so naïve to think that NONE OF THAT WOULD MATTER if he wasn’t on pace to break a WhiteSOX single season home run record. By the way, wouldn’t it be great if somehow Thome could hit 67 and wipe out the juicy fraud Sosa for having the city record for homers. It would be cool to have a nice guy as the home run king around here. Oh well, whether he hits 67 or not, he is the home run king around here for now and that’s what counts. Massive grand slam last night! I miss Rowand but shit JT puts the spring in the SOX step and he his hungry for a title (after coming so close with the Indians).

I don’t miss Frank Thomas, but good woodwork out in Oakland man. In limited at bats, he’s got like 19 home runs or something like that. Wow.

I am the only SOX fan at hhe (as far as I know). There is one gal (nice kid) who wears a Todd Walker jersey and bleeds that blue smurf juice, loves her team etc…We engage in some playful banter (which of course will one day end in my grisly death). Here is the conversation that we had yesterday re why she should punch AJ. I am “Me” and she is “Cub Girl.”

Me: Have you punched AJ yet?
Cub Girl: “I would sure like to.”
Me: “I can help you do that.”
CG: “Wait a minute, what are you talking about?”
Me: “The SOX have an online campaign going. If you go to MLB dot com and punch AJ you can help him win the write-in vote for the AllStar Game.”
CG: “Why the hell would I want to do that?”

Quinking thickly I came up with the following argument.

Me: “You love the Cubs right?”
CG: “Yes, and you know I hate the SOX!”
Me: “Perfect, here’s why you should vote for AJ.”
CG: “I’m listening.”
Me: “Ok, if you vote for AJ the American League will have a better chance of winning the AllStar Game.”
CG: “Why would I want that to happen? I hate the American League.”
Me: “Hear me out. If the American League wins the AllStar Game, whatever American League team goes to the World Series will have home field advantage.”
CG: “That’s stupid. And why the hell would I want that to happen?”
Me: “I’m not finished. It might be tough, the Tigers and the Red Sox…and even Oakland could all possibly beat the SOX in the playoffs, but I still like the WhiteSOX chances to get to the World Series and if they win they will have home field advantage.”
CG: “Why the FUCK would I want that?”
Me: “Well, if the WhiteSOX can win the tough American League playoffs, they will certainly sweep the representative from the weaker National League. If the SOX have home field advantage, like last year, they will not be able to clinch the world championship in front of their home crowd. Ergo, voting for AJ will keep SOX fans from celebrating on the home field.”
Cub Girl: “I feel like punching you.”

And who doesn’t feel like that. GO SOX and beat the uh, other Sox!

Trust me - nary a tear did I shed when Shammy So-so got what he deserved. I'll admit to being hopeful any time he came up to the plate with players on in 2003 and, more often than not, disappointed after. That was because we had a thing going. I miss Moises "pee on my own hands" Alou far more than I miss Sosa. Most of all, I miss Stoney who's gone because management caved to a bunch of pissy players. I'm still dealing with the players that are gone doing so well in their new digs (I think Nomar was hitting, like, .800 or something...). That, in itself, seems to indicate that there's something wrong with the environment on our team. I just wish Sox fans could enjoy being the reigning champs more than kicking Cubs fans when they're down. Now I sound pissy... Screw all of you!

I think Joan said it best "I think the WS will have a fun time beating up on the NL." I have to agree. AJ's having a nice year but you have to give the final spot the rookie Liriano (9-1, 1.99). He's helped keep the Twins right there.

Watch how you talk about Alsip or you'll have Jer and his Italian buddies using you for batting practice. Sorry OldKobe, but position players, espcecially veteran ones, deserve to go to the All Star game before some rookie pitcher. For all we know, Liriano's had a good streak because the league is unfamiliar with him. He probably is as good as his numbers, but he just doesn't have the body of work to justify a selection. AJ is no saint, but he's no devil either. Invariably, whenever we talk about the specific plays he's involved in, he always gets absolved because the other guy overreacted---Zambrano waving his finger, the dropped third strike, the punch, stepping over Boone. Leave him be. He's whipsmart at pitch selection and throws the ball well. You guys diminish him as a ballplayer by talking about everything but his playing ability. I've got other things to worry about. My Reds are sinking faster than the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I can immagine the conversation between you and Cub Girl. I hold you personally responsible for her increasing insanity.

But at least we are helping the overall productivity at hhe. On Thurs there was 172% increase in conversations about punching AJ.

bigSoda's got a good point about Steve Stone. I learned something every time I heard that guy talk. He is amazing.

Look, I think you had ought to stop pointing at our guys to defend your guys. I never do that. I think Barrett did what he did out of frustrastion in a moment when he was not thinking clearly. He just got clobbered to the ground in the middle of a losing game. He's getting heavily heckled all day and then AJ slaps the plate and says something. I don't know what. Should he have hit him? No. But he did and he did the right thing by apologizing. I do not know if AJ apologized for what he did or said but I like to think he did.

In your version of baseball, a little rough housing and scrapping is acceptable so long as noone gets hurt. I am not gonna attack AJ for his other scrapes with people and I am not gonna harass Barrett either. If you had to watch runner after runner cross the plate like he does, you might just start hitting people too. I am surprised he hasn't picked up the bat of the hitter and threatened approaching base runners. I would.

If you're talking about Barrett picking up a bat and threatening base runners, I'll tell you why he hasn't done it...

There's too damn many of them for one man to fight.

I just used Barrett versus AJ to show what each act of dickwadishness on both sides represents. Barrett fought with Oswalt (aka g bushy and what happened?)...AJ is a prick and probably says alot of shit on the field so I will agree with you and bigSoda to a point but

Aw forget it. I'm tired of this AJ vs Barrett argument. I'll try not to mention the guy. I've been thinking about something else you guys've been saying. I think SOX fans may enjoy sticking it to the Cubs as much as cheering for the world champs. dev suggested that that is sort of sad...it is acting like second class citizens. Maybe it is because SOX fans have such an inferiority complex that they lash out this way.

I think that is possible and may even affect your humble blogster (have I gone PDawg?). To be honest with you, part of the reason I rip the Cubs is because the franchise is a joke...again, no offense to Cub fans that is the team you root for. The Clippers made the playoffs this year, and they ripped off the Bulls (boy I miss Elton Brand). I'd like to think that I am piling on the Cubs and not their fans - although their fans get caught in the crossfire - because they want to like the team.

I'm a big Marc Silverman guy (ESPN 1000, he just got demoted to evenings which shows how much taste I have) - he calls himself a die hard Cub fan (I think he is) but since 2004 he hasn't even been able to like his team (for some of the reasons described by bigSoda above) and now it's getting worse with A-Ram dogging it and Krusty's lame excuses.

Maybe Cub fans all should be reminded - forget what edP says because it is not aimed at you. To those who love baseball we are friends (and even those who don't..uh, what is my point) - oh yeah - I am ripping the franchise and the guys who I think are laughable.

Cub fans please do not take my statements about the team as personal affronts. I think of the franchise (not your taste, not your love for your Cubbies because that is truly amazing) but I think of your franchise like the Clippers, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Arizona Cardinals, the United States Soccer Team...

Maybe I shouldn't be so puffy, the franchise I root for hasn't gotten it done for 88 years...but I think things are changing.

OleKobe, I hope Sultan is right about Liriano - he is pitching oput of his mind....I don't want the Twins to come back so soon. Stupid Twins.

Maybe they can rehire McFail.

Peacne and love to us all.

Yikes

By the way, I think I put plenty of jokes about the team I root for and the fan base in this post...according to the Sultan, I risk life and limb joking about Alsip...

...not to mention mullets, computers etc...in response to bigSoda, I am having fun with the SOX as champs - i can make fun of the fan base in a way that I didn't before....

and while I will try to leave the AJ /Barrettt thing behind...I will keep ripping the Cubs organization and some of their pisssy pissssy players. Don't think of it as kicking Cubs fans when they're down. You deserve better than Nefi dammit!

Can I point out that by many players' claims, Michael Jeffrey Jordan was one of the biggest trash talkers in the game? Talking is just talking. Stepping on someone with spikes or punching someone is bad. I think we're all on board there.

The Cubs are fucked because they're selling out every game. Why would Tribune Co. do anything to risk that right now? Naturally, they get hot on the day my folks take my grandpa to see his beloved Brewers at Miller Park.
