I Don't Know

Driving through the OF yesterday. While I was stopped at a long light I heard a familiar guitar opening.

The old-timey punk nasal guitar was followed by the rough thumping and a high hat way too loud in the mix that always bugged me.

Sorry punk fans of ‘I don’t give a fuck’ mic placement on the snare.

Of course I made two records where we gave too much of a fuck about mic placement on the snare and the drums in general and we had the same problem on a few of the tracks.

The song was blaring out of a Corolla of all things, driven by an oily faced, dirty-blonde who was maybe 17.

It was Naked Raygun’s I Don’t Know and I quickly found myself in the embarrassing position of being a gray-templed douchebag rocking out to music in someone else’s car.

I couldn’t help myself. Besides the cool nasal guitar intro and the annoying but (I guess) necessary drum noise, that song contains what I consider to be some of the best lines to come out of the whole Chicago punk thing:

“What poor gods we’ll make”

I'm not an expert on that stuff, nor am I the biggest fan of the genre either but I remember thinking when I first heard the track in the late 80's, working at KDI with Bill - Yeah, these guys got it right.

After the light I remembered I had the song in my car. I pulled into the White Castle parking lot, dug through the glovebox of my Ford Focus station wagon, found my copy of the Summer ‘07 WILT and listened to it until I picked up the boy at his grandparents’.

What poor gods we’ll make indeed.

Once again the Rabbi touches on a profound truth:

There is indeed a fine line between giving and not giving a fuck how the snare is mic'd. Yet there is no relief from a too-loud hi-hat.

Too loud is relative. Some songs (like I Don't Know) are driven along by it.

Remember at Larry's when he wanted to kill the hi-hats altogether? The "professional" CD he brought down had plenty. Maybe it's not just a case of too much or too little, but how it's EQ'd, as well.

Good thing there's never been a guitar too loud in the mix...

I wasn't talking about Larry and the drum mics...that was the least LEAST LEAST by a thousand miles, agrivated I ever was about putting mics on anything...

No doubt that mixdown was a CF but as soon as we decided to abansdon it and go with the raw mixes it was better

Everytime I hear that tick tick tick of a high hat I hear Alex's voice going "Right, we're gonna do a practice recording on Chris' snare and try two mics and 10 different mic placements"

My personal Vietnam.

Again, another sing of how easy my life has been.

I will watch Chocolate Rain later

You guys rock!

Young people know who Naked Raygun is? I never would have guessed.

Oh yeah, in case you didn't know - 2007 CWS = worst team ever. It breaks my heart.

As bad as the 89 Sox? That was the last WhiteSOX team to lose 90 and the last team to finish in last - I think.

The Sox will be lucky to lose just 90 games. Did you see the Boston series? It was so ugly.

I don't know I can't count that high.
