Golf and Cosmology

Great time with Alex on the golf course last night. He found a golf ball with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers symbol on it. He said: “Dad, this is what pirates use for golf.”

I love taking the kid golfing – other than helping to make him – it may be one of my favorite things I get to do for my son. Uh, sorry about that. However, last night our conversation stretched the limits of my understanding of cosmology.

Alex: “Dad what does outer space look like?”
Me: “There are big floating rocks, stars, and collections of stars called galaxies we live in something called a solar system where planets revolve around their home star. The odds are good that there are more solar systems out there, some even have two stars – and these things called radio-telescopes that see things with sound have found what they believe to be star systems with planets.”
Alex: “What else is out there?”
Me: “There are black holes, comets stuff that very smart scientists call dark matter…”
Alex: “But what does outer space look like?”
Me: “What do you mean?”
Alex: “Does it have corners, is it a line, a circle?”
Me: “Oh, the shape of the universe.”
Alex: “Yes.”

shit

Then I tried to describe this portion of Bill Bryson’s Short History of Nearly Everything where this British astrophysicist says if you begin traveling in one direction and you go and go and go – eventually you do not poke your head out of the curtains at the end of the universe…you end up back where you started. I think the boy understood it.

On the way home we were talking about numbers. Kids love to talk about infinity. Then Alex said: “Numbers can’t go on forever. They have to stop because everything stops.”

We’ve talked about google and some of the implications for the possibility of the highest possible number that can be expressed. But again I always left the door open for my boy that numbers go on forever. Now with my fast and loose part-bullshit (because I don’t understand it, no knock on British or any astrophysicists) answer from me…I’ve opened the door for confusion. I used my dopey spaceship ends up back where it started without talking about the universe as a lake’s surface barring these spots where time and space are distorted…or the non-Euclidian notion of infinite centers and what distance means in this sense. Alex offered this possibility…

“Maybe numbers go all the way up and then they start back at 1.”

It could be brilliant except the beginning of Alex’s meditations on such stuff is a faulty, half-assed answer his dad gave him on the golf course. Shit.

The biggest series in Chicago baseball this year begins tonight. Those who know, know that I have a house divided on this. The boy is a Tigers fan. Should be exciting. Even though we cheer for different teams, we already agreed that we will eat chocolate ice cream together while we watch part of the game tonight. Cool.

Someone I work with said something really touching about the show on Friday night. I am one of those ‘look at me’ kind of bullshit people and maybe this enables my personal bullshit – but I thought the person in question wouldn’t give a shit about the songs I write – especially the wordy ones…and Kish goes on for 15 minutes. But they liked it and went out of their way to tell me so. Pretty cool when things like that happen.

Today is the special election to fill the vacancy left by Rep. R Duke Cnnnghmmnm.

I hear it could go down to the wire.

You did a far better job w/the boy than I could have done. I'm a little surprised, though, that the concept of endlessness didn't touch on God. Surely he's been told that God is eternal, no? (Heh heh - I just called you Shirley.) Anyway the only thing I could have added would be that ideas - like numbers - do not have to end. And I probably would have been very proud of myself until he asked why I think numbers that he can see and count are just ideas.... Cripes.

Since the boy is so young and impressionable - when I talk about God to him I say 'Mom and I believe this' and we hope that when you are older you believe these things too...

We talk about God but when we are talking about things that are more concrete...concepts that he will need to help develop his mind - I don't want to confuse him (although I did that anyway).

This is not to say that concepts of God and theoretical physics are mutually exclusive (they have come into contact from time to time and not through crappy psuedo-science like intelligent des)...but the kid is 5

I think the best way to help develop his reason is through math and science not theology

As I said, we talk about God but more in terms of God loves us, he cares about us, Mom and I believe you are not floating helplessly on some rock in a loveless universe

Decisions we make matter...because the world is about love...mom and I believe God is love...he gave us His son (Himself) to show that He understands us, he loves us - we are not nothing - we are part of creation and the creator knows us by name...

What we need to do is be able to answer God's call when it comes - not necessarily to die - but to help someone when they need it...

But I want his reason to be trained. I think reason leads women and men to ask good questions about their fate, what we are the nature of the universe and maybe the nature of God and a relationship with God...

If all I give him is dogma he will one day be old enough to see that it was dogma and then be led to (what I believe to be a false - but not falsifiable - conclusion) that all religion is - is dogma.

Enough.

Shut up ed

my grandparents used to take me golfing all the time as a kid at buena vista. i loved the golf back then and it's really most of my memories of my grandpa.
bonnie's been begging me to go play a round with her..i think i'll finally cave in. there's some beautiful courses here on the ocean that would make a fine backdrop to drunk tom in a cart.

OK tom but just remember that every time people who rock hit the golf course a fissure occurs somewhere in the universe, out of which pours billions of tan Dockers and multipatterned polo shirts.

I think when ed, old dog, big johnny and I went golfing, they had a tsunami or something.

I can totally see little Thujone on the Buena Vista. There were foxes fighting last night in the woods behind the second hole.

The way the course frames the sky - I love to just walk in the middle of it with the kid. I'm not a nature guy but I like some green shit in the backdrop

Hey, P Dawg. I think it's getting to be about that time again.

ed, be sure to warn you're little guy about black holes and the danger posed by stepping too close to an event horizon. Also, tell him to watch out for dark matter- 90% of the universe might be made up of it - it could be anywhere! You don't want to bump into any of that stuff.

I like how Alex asked why infinite numbers can't just start back at 1 when they're over. Infinity is a tough concept. Good job at explaining the galaxy(ies).

I like your father-son anecdotes, ed. Keep 'em comin'.
