More 2007 Baseball Comparisons

Middle Infield – ADANTAGE SOX! 5 Juan Uribe made the two most important plays at shortstop in Chicago baseball history. The minute I wrote that I realized how sad it was, but in many ways Chicago baseball history is a sad story. I think after all that’s gone on for Uribe, there is a good chance that he will recover some of the real swagger he had at the position and maybe even match some of the hitting numbers he put up when the SOX first got him from the Rocks. Any offense from Uribe would be a plus. Hell, I’m just happy the poor bastard is not in jail. But I think last year Uribe had the lowest OBP with the minimum at bats in baseball (or at least in the American League). That ain’t good.

15 Tadahito Iguchi will have to play better than last season to get the kind of contract he desires. I think the SOX understand coaching middle infielders and will be able to help TadI improve his range at 2nd (and not just his propensity to make some spectacular plays) but help him be a bit smarter at the plate…and most importantly get him straight on the bases. Both Sox middle infielders’ all around game inspires more confidence in me than the cubs middle infield cast of characters - 7 Mark DeRosa & 2 Ryan Theriot along with 3 Cesar Izturis & 5 Ronny Cedeno. De Rosa will hit but his range is questionable. Like I told Santi I saw the Sox and Rangers play a lot in the last two years. DeRosa will hit at the Shrine but he will let a lot more of those NL singles get by him. Maybe he’s the perfect player for the NL. Izturis, by far the best “normal” fielder the Cubs have in the infield (minus the superstar DLee at 1st) has been inconsistent at best at the plate for the majority of his career. Before the elbow (or shoulder) injury there were questions about CI ever being a great every day player. Since the surgery, and even now at the end of Spring there are just questions. Izturis has a lot on his mind with his bat, his future and covering for A-Ram at 3rd and DeRosa at 2nd. Cedeno is someone who is on the cubs fans radar. They love him for some reason that eludes me. I remember he threw the ball over Lee’s head last year (before Lee got hurt) and I guess that’s impressive because DLee can get to a lot of balls. Santi loves Theriot but again, I don’t know shit about Theriot. I know that the SOX middle infield is battle tested and ready to go. They also have pitchers in front of them who know how to pitch for defense when they are throwing strikes. I’m not sure the cubs have a single staring pitcher who understands their infield defense the way Garland and Buehrle do. The cubs seem to rely on their crappy grass. Again this seems to me to be one of the bigger advantages for the SOX or one of the bigger “knowns” in Chicago baseball – defense up the middle.
