Never Too Early for a Dumb Prediction
Unoriginal repeating bastard that I am - I am throwing out the exact same WS prediction that I put up last year….
- and don’t get me wrong, I hope the SOX screw everything up and win the Central….
Old edP is going third person and picking the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs to meet each other in the Fall Classic. Don’t ask me to pick a winner because all I care about is this match up. The Cubs in October is a ratings dream for MLB and these are the two remaining underdogs left in baseball (with Cleveland, as a city, being the greater of the two dogs).
Does that make sense?
One Cleveland-related prediction that I feel absolutely confident in making - - DeRosa is gonna mop up the floor with SOX pitching. He was a real WhiteSOX killer when he played with the Rangers and he has only become a better hitter in the intervening years. The SOX are going to see him nineteen times a season and the Cleveland infielder could pile up some fantastic stats.

Saint Kimberly Jo's Day
In my sorry-ass excuse for a failed rock and roll misadventure of a career, I a proud of all the songs I’ve written about Kim and our adventures (and misadventures). When someone tells me (not that this happens every day) that they love Lincoln County or Mt. St. Michael I never suffer from anything resembling false modesty…or modesty modesty for that matter.
I readily admit those songs are fucking great cuz the band was great and the subject material (Kimberly Jo) is even greater.
But sho enough, the song that contains the closest thing to a full expression of my feeling for this girl was not written by me. It’s actually from some random, bullshit late-70’s Bob Dylan record (Street Legal I think)…but this song really gets it done for me. The funny thing is, Dylan didn’t write it either. Guess he had the same thought I did, his lady deserved something wonderful and uplifting and written by someone else.
Happy birthday baby…I will never forget what you mean to me and how you saved my life.

Easy as 1, 2, 4
Thanks and much love to Larry at LnL as he listened us to play a 1:24 track and a 0:55 second song over and friggin over and over. But that 0:55 second song was totally worth it. That’s 0:55 of gold.
Big Hairy D was down with the stomach flu *cough - junkie…(sorry)
- so we worked on basic tracks for three songs without our favorite guitar hero.
One for the Walkers
Two for the Stoned
Four to Blow
Yeah, there’s nothing subtle about Kish except for my wry, unknowing, knowing smile knowing that this record is way nicer than the one we could be (and one day will be) making about the lesser Kishwaukee Valley.
Alex is still sick (it’s Wed morning now) and Kim is working on sub plans so she can stay home with our little buddy. I’ll leave for work when she gets back but I am listening to the raw mixes of Kish with the first 6 songs somewhat in place…
Virginia (done)
One for the Walkers (need to add Dev)
We Can Always Get Away (minus some of the final vox stuff)
Harvest Here (fix the ring in my guitar and add little Devin solo)
Two for the Stoned (add Dev and maybe crazy, jittery drum thing)
Francesca (done)

Hawks Smashed
Gave Al his belated birthday present…
A trip to see the Hawks get their shit handed to them by the NY Islanders - and believe me, you don’t get to see an ass-whipping like that every day.
We had fun although we had to lie to the boy. I got the tix (only 2) before I knew the kid loved live hockey so much. We told him that Grandpa Al and I were going to a “tax meeting.”
Hey we’ve got to find out how much I was going to get back in actual payroll tax cuts before it’s taken away by the state income tax hike.
At one point during the game the “Kiss Me I’m Irish” cam was showing lovers, young and old alike on Tyranno-Vision and to fans watching on tv at home.
Al: “I’m having fun, but if they put that thing on us I’m not going to kiss you."
Me: “Good. We already lied to the boy about the game. I can’t afford the kind of therapy that’s gonna cost coupled with him seeing his dad and grandpa kissing on tv.”
Go Hawks!

I Put the "A" in Chester A. Arthur
In my pathetic struggle for happiness in this life, nothing works better than trying to do something for someone else. Writers, whether they are commercial or artistic successes or failures run the risk of becoming utterly self-absorbed pricks living in their own heads. I do a lot of that as it is. Little things like our show Thursday and the release of the ItC single combat that negative shit and for that I am grateful.
It is the time of year when friends of mine and people I have come across in my former “:profession” inundate me with teaching job opportunities. I’m sure their intentions are good or at least better than mine. They treat me as if I am missing something in my life or there is something else I should be doing. But I have figured out how to work as a writer and I am beginning to learn how to live that way without being completely self-absorbed (while still realizing there are a lot of I’s in this blog post). With no humility I say - it is fun being me…I really fucking love it and if the people who act like they feel sorry for me had any inkling of this they’d concern themselves with something else. I hope that doesn’t sound too bitter, it is what it is. I am not a bitter man. I am the opposite. I am grateful for the Lord who put me in this position and helped me see certain things about me, the limits of my own talents and the limitless vistas love and sharing offer.
I am also grateful for all the wonderful friends, musicians and DK Rock City partygoers who made Thursday such a success. I will post the results of everyone’s efforts here and on a companion site. More later as shit develops.
Set
Knucklehead Song
Hey Lucky/For Medicinal Purposes Only
The End of Everything

The most important thing about Thursday? I shaved until I cut the image of Chester A. Arthur made young and fair.

We'll Rock for Food
Be advised that bigDrag, the Great Influence Machine and Supercush will be playing a rock show on Thursday March 12, 2009 at the House in DeKalb Rock City. The Old Kishwaukee Band will also unleash its latest singe IN THE CAN. $5 or a can of food gets you the single along with the OKB’s 1st record I WANNA while supplies last. All proceeds from the single and the OKB merch table go to the DeKalb Food Pantry and there will be a donation disclosure blog page coming soon.
The door is 6 bones and does not necessarily go to anybody but the other bands and the sound guy. How’s that for full disclosure?
If you can’t make the show then feel free to enjoy (or punish yourself) by checking out the OKB single -

Steve Phillips Got it Part Right
Let me preface this by saying I think that Steve Phillips was a GM from baseball’s past and as time goes on his way of thinking (both in terms of finances and player development) is slowly going the way of the t-rex.
Phillips said that it was Lou who stunted Fukudome’s development as a major league ballplayer. His impatience with young players or inability to help this Japanese star become assimilated with MLB and American life played a part in the 2nd half decline of Koske in 2008.
Assimilation my stinking Slovenian ass! Has Steve Phillips heard of Ichiro (not Eee cheer row as Hawk would have us believe but Eeee chuh row)
Sorry fans of phonics
Oh, he can assimilated players all right...we should call him Lou-cutis of Borg.
Sorry nerd-ass nerds.
I’m not in the clubhouse but I’ve got to believe that Lou had every reason to help the kid succeed and had the necessary experience with all sorts of players to help Mr. Fukudome. I do think that Fukudome buckled under the pressure of the baseball season and the weight of unrealistic expectations but that came from being a part of Cub Nation or Cubbie Culture or whatever you want to call it.
Now, I am not talking about my dear friends like Santi, Josh, Dev and Laura who are good baseball fans and know as much if not more about it than I do…
But there is a great weight on Cub fans brought on, in part, by the wild success of Jim Hendry’s tenure as GM on the North Side. They have been very close to the biggest of dances and competitive for a majority of the Oughts. Cubs fans want to celebrate, they want to have one of these season fulfill their dreams and any one of the parts that do not live up to expectations…there is a burden to be borne by both player and fans.
I’m not saying Fukudome would’ve played more consistently if he took more money to play with my beloved WhiteSox but the pressure of expectations are not the same on the South Side and there is a sort of pride for the Sox organization in sticking by a guy (especially a great defensive player) as fans of the team bemoan the fact that he can’t hit
- for recent examples see Joe Crede and Aaron Rowand two guys that the SOX waited and waited for and they both popped at the right time.
While I think it is a mistake for Fukudome to play in the stupid WBC this year, I wish him well. Believe me Cub fans, the guys wandering around in right and left field in Wrigley are going to need all the help they can get from center.

Encounter with Hope
The little platoon watched the Next Generation series premier on DVD. Kim and I devoured the show when we were just crazy kids in love and now that we are crazy grown ups in love it is a pure joy to share these episodes with our son. The payoff at the end of the 1st episode (without giving it away) suggests that if humans can get their shit together they will approach the unknown with wonder and be a blessing to the world (universe…whatever) rather than its bane.
Those who know me know that I am not a believer in the utopian visions for government submitted for approval here on earth from time to time…I find ideology (especially of the utopian variety) to be a distraction at best and poison at its worse. But this tv show can be seen as offering hope, not necessarily for some future with fantastic technology and the abolition of private property…
- but the real offering of hope is for those who hear such stories and find the best of humanity in themselves.

I Wished Them Well
Got strings for the Ric, and was few minutes late for my guitar student. I had one cancellation but that worked out for all parties. Alex and I enjoyed some daylight and had our first game of Whip the Football at the Guy on the trampoline for 2009. The boy is really starting to put something in his throws.
Eeeeyouch!
As excited as I am for the new members of the White Sox, I am really gonna miss Joe Crede and Juan Uribe. Crede will probably never get a big contract and Uribe, who made the last two outs of the White Sox World Series signed a minor league deal with the shit-ass San Francisco Giants. I wish ‘em both well and am glad for the memories they gave me & the boy.

The Time for Certain Things
As I boy I came across stories or ideas in comic books, tv, movies (and often) in music and I thought ‘Gee I wish I thought of that’ - there were even times I felt a part of the idea or that part of the idea was actually mine.
I still get these feelings.
Odds are they have more to do with admiration (or envy) than something metaphysical and that’s ok. As a man I can live with ideas of mine in good, mediocre or otherwise in various states of completion or repair. The careful writer learns to see where they are (if not always) what they are in the course of working.
But as reader, observer, fan…call it whatever…one needs to learn what to make of things they come across that remind them of their own work…especially if they are sure that somehow they thought of it first or have the right angle on it.
Finding resonance of one’s work in other things around them is exhilarating and scary at the same time. When it happens to me I feel as if I am on the right path and a hack at the same time.
I’m sure this is not a new phenomena. Thoughtful discussion of this resonance, if that’s the right word, can be found as recently as Nietzsche’s Gay Science
NOT THAT YOU SICK BASTARDS
….and certainly the topic is touched on by the ancients in their writings on friendship and the point of philosophers communicating,
My part in the story is small compared to something like Aristotle’ discussion of the Platonists at the beginning of the Nicomachean Ethics and what it means to be philosophic “friends”
- but part of what I have learned is that this resonance (or wisdom, if it is that) is not social learning or social growth but at the same time, this kind of learning is impossible without society.
When people (friends or otherwise) talk about computers, personal web pages and new forms of communication, inevitably the conversation turns to ’what does this mean for society as a whole' or 'where are we as a people?'
I think that conversation has it part right. Something in our social interaction changes with the machine or the way we communicate through our personal machines or the types of information we consider one on top of the other via our machines…
But whatever social vector their might be seems to be irrelevant or has nothing to do with me or, maybe put with more humility - is not for fucking me to say eh.
The exposure to ideas, art and especially music through my machine tweaks me as an individual in ways that I am beginning to perceive. It does not produce a crucible in which I can measure exactly how far I have come or what I am made of…but the way I pursue information through the computer and points of contact I have on the machine help (if I look at them honestly) provide context.
If we are honest with ourselves we all want to try and place ourselves, our lives in the proper context in the hopes of making sense of it all.
Back to Aristotle (or as Aquinas calls him - “the Philosopher”) A says all men seek to know or all me want for or lack wisdom.
The same may be said for context and when we can get it, even if it leads us to see that some of our precious ideas are treading the same water as other stuff we are changed (I think) for the better in having that backdrop against which we can measure ourselves.
More later if I can make sense of it all.
I still get these feelings.

47 Seconds
Thanks and much love to John and Janine for scoring Hawks tickets and inviting our family. The boy is so lucky. He goes to his first game and it takes the Hawks a mere 47 seconds to put one in the net. Then he sees Ben Eager totally kick somebody’s ass – his poster with Chief Blackhawk and drawings of Kaner, the B-lin Wall & Cookie gets him on tv near the end of the game - - and to top it all off, the Hawks win at home with some kid from the Ice Hogs in goal.
I am a still a baseball first kind of guy but one thing I can say for Hawks fans…they are nicer (at the game) than SOX fans, Cub fans, and baseball fans in general that I have met at random other ballparks over the last coupla years (San Diego & Milwaukee).
Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
