Thank You Once Again

Lord,

Thank you for the gift of this past year. I am beginning to see the minimal requirements of being a follower of Christ and pray that in the next year I do more to serve and live as you would have me live. Thank you for my family and friends who make the good days better and the bad days bearable. Finally, thank you for the gift of music especially those ascending melody lines you have hidden for us to find. With the exception of my sweet wife, nothing in this world has done more to point me to you.

Amen

Happy 40th

Congrats & much love to my in-laws as they celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Kim & TR hosted a great dinner for them and their close friends. Everyone @ Devono’s were so accommodating, right down letting Kim, Trace, Al & Judi and I belly up to the bar after all the guests were gone so we could share a relaxing post-party drink.

Kim gives me so much in this marriage. Of these gifts, her spirit during the holidays and the joy she brings to family life….exposing me to these things makes me a better man. There is a side to me that would rather spend the night in watching the stupid Giants and the stupid Patriots (I did sneak away a few times during last night’s dinner). Kim’s energy, love and joy for family doesn’t allow me to be that man. She gently encourages me to come out of the hermitage and embrace all that’s good, bad and otherwise about family life…

Thanks to my sweet wife for making this life good and thanks to my in-laws for having and raising this remarkable woman.

Open the Eyes of My Heart

…and blow it out your fucking ass!

I am a Catholic and love my faith. However when those fake-ass Eddie Vedder-lite singers tell me it’s time to worship in their grainy-but-not-from-smoking-or-doing-anything-cool voices…

…I start to think that maybe I haven’t given Satan enough of a chance.

No Country for Old Dogs

Went to the movies with OD, DC and our friend Jeff tonight….saw No Country for Old Men. I learned the following things

1. Old Dog sort of looks like Chigurh in profile

2. If I ever get cancer I’m going to refer to it as “the cancer.”

3. I can’t stress this enough people, when you come home check your doors to see if the lock has been blown out by a captive bolt pistol.

4. The US should send Chigurh to Iraq. All we have to do is give that guy a dusty old Ford and some air and our enemies will lose their urge to insurge real quick.

During the course of drinks with DC before the movie we came to the conclusion that Benazir Bhutto was sort of like the Anna Nicole Smith of serious news. We all knew something bad was going to happen to her when she came back to Pakistan (or the Pak as the kids are calling it these days…I wonder what the area code for Pakistan is)

DC said, “She came back to Pakistan and they blew up her homecoming parade. They put her under house arrest. She was released from house arrest and someone blew up the parade celebrating that. She attended this last rally and was shot and blown up.”

Miraculously she escaped having her brain gored by a captive bolt pistol.

And somewhere Chigurh is shaking his fist at fate.

Sweet Ride

Alex and I went to a Christmas party w/ some old P-family friends in Joliet (technically Crest Hill). We let Mrs. P recover a bit @ home….while we missed mom it is always a blast to travel with the boy. We made up this song…

Rudolf the red-butted reindeer
Had a very stinky butt
And if you ever smelled it
You would tape your nostrils shut

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They always said to Rudolf
You can haul your musty butt away

Then one stinky Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
Rudolf with your butt so red
Get the *BLEEEP away from my *BLEEPIN’ sled

Then all the reindeer smelled him
As they shouted out with fear
Rudolf the red-butted reindeer
Get your stinkin’ *BLEEP the *BLEEEP outta here

Yeah, we’re a coupla Christmas hardcore muthaBLEEPERS

Our old family friends gave Alex a remote control Ferrari. His response?

Alex: “What a sweet ride. I don’t even have a driver’s license.”

Yeah. Pretty cool.

On the subject of sweet, Alex made a candle holder for Kim & I. Perhaps it was originally a jar of baby food or something like that. He even got a little votive candle and put it in for us. He said the way he painted it, there should be some glowing green and blue lights coming off the candle. We lit the candle and let it burn while we watched the Hawks win and the Bulls suck last night.

Almost didn’t make the Townie Christmas party for reasons too gross to go into here. My stomach was killing me. Then about 1am, unable to sleep I got out of bed, drove to the bar and got a delicious glass of whiskey & ice along with a bottle Bud.

Drove Joe and Steener home because of the nasty, nasty rain.

Drove back to Paul’s, hung out late but only drank one more beer. Believe it or not my stomach felt better after a little extra-curricular activity. Better than laying in my bed like an old lump.

The Perfect Answer

The next time g-bushy is asked a question relating to the destroyed CIA tapes he should simply respond: "I thought we were gettin' rid of the rest of the Clinton porn."

Nice to see that our friend from the District made it out here in on piece...although I left him at the bar last night playing darts with the Old Dog. Many possibilities for mayhem there. I better check the Old Dog's news service to see how it all turned out.

Shouldn't This Be

...on one of my other blogs?

Thanks and much love to Mister Old Dog again. He finished the eq/re-eq of Anyone Can Make a Shadow and I have added it to the numbers for the Old Kishwaukee Band’s I WANNA. It doesn’t fit at all and it is perfect.

I wanna give I WANNA to Cousin Mike & Bill but not without finishing some of the packaging stuff so they will have some sort of idea what this thing is going to look like.

I wanna keep thinking that this is gonna be cool just like everything else has been music-wise in 2007. Without blowing my own horn (because it’s not really) this has been the smoothest/best/luckiest year I’ve had making music and writing in some time. It’s not blowing your own horn if you admit to being lucky or having a lucky year, right? It’s not like saying the gods love me because I am so pretty. I’m just lucky or feel lucky and it has helped this year.

Period.

Wish I could say the same for the BEARS.

The risk of failure with this Old Kishwaukee Band stuff is part of what excites me about it. The few people I’ve tried to describe it to in its entirety (or where I think it will end up) have looked at me like I was absolutely bonkers.

Hence I am more interested than ever in doing it. And I like the fact that I am beginning with some old/left for dead tracks. I had so much fun putting together I WANNA I couldn’t stop there. I’ve got enough tracks together for a second thing (GO COMMANDO!) and that will be out in time to say good bye to our great Commancho (sorry Kimberly Jo) – our great Commancho gBushy deserves a going away present next Inauguration Day and the outtakes from an album of outtakes is sort of what he deserves.

Did I mention I was insane or do I have to mention things like that?

I should probably concentrate on getting studio time together with Larry to start the next bigDrag record. We’re ready to go and he’s busy as fuck. We gotta meet somewhere in the middle on this.

Finally, if you see me at the bar, ask me about my idea for a Christmas single next year. I guarantee that you’ll consider slapping a restraining order on me when I tell you.

What a Scoop

I'm not trying to scoop the official news service that has been covering the Old Dog lately, but I attended his 40th birthday soirée last night and a wonderful time was had by all. Joe, in a gesture of magnanimity that is uniquely his even invited a common cat burglar to attend the festivities.

The only dark moment?

I chased a shot of whiskey with a glass of whiskey.

Thanks ChrisB.

Say It Ain't So Chone

I am not disappointed that Hunter went to the Angels.

I don't mind that Fukudome went to the Cubs rather than my beloved SOX. The Cubs spent years cultivating that relationship, studying his track record, biding their time...they did the right thing and subsequently they got their man.

I think the Giants overpaid for Rowand (like Grant says) and a 5 year contract is too long for someone like Rowand to play center...

I will even understand if the boSox will not allow the WhiteSOX to acquire CoCo Crisp. Frankly, my (my Sox? - I'm an idiot) SOX don't have anything the world champs want.

But if the cubs outbid the WhiteSOX for Chone Figgins and its just cocksuckin mutherfuckin money that ices the deals I will be pissed at Kenny but I will make it my business to tell any cub fan who rubs it in my face that your team is the Yankees of sucking!

Fuck.

Ok, it feels better to get that off my chest.

You Wanna Help Ike?

Just a few thoughts about hot stove shit and the Cubs’ acquisition of Fukudome…

Why do we get the leak that WhiteSOX matched the cubs offer? If Kenny deliberately leaks this info for PR reasons, to make the SOX look like they are competing for a right fielder who will hit 5th or 6th it’s a stupid move and here’s why…

1. You are saying to all of baseball (including your fandom) “All things being equal, this guy would rather play for the cubs than the SOX” It shows all the PR savvy of Jimmy the Greek in his last days at CBS.

2. You are telling the intelligent members of your fan base that you are willing to get into a bidding war for a player you don’t need - he is a natural right fielder (he may end up better than Jermaine, but you just re-signed JD to play fucking right field ad hit 5th!) The SOX already have two shortstops, two third basemen it’s like Noah’s fucking ark - two more of anything and (to quote drug addled basketball legend Michael Ray Richardson) “The ship be sinkin’”

I actually think Kenny raised the bid a bit from the cubs and Padres initial offer, knowing that Fukudome would not come to the SOX but after all the time & effort Hendry spent on this move (almost two years in the making) Kenny wanted to cost the blue team to shell out a few more clams right at the end.

I probably mixed a metaphor above, but my point should be clear. Kind of stinks if that’s Kenny’s motivation. He significantly low balled Tadahito and managed to keep other teams away from him at the same time. He got excellent production from the guy and used him as the perfect #2 to help the SOXwin a World Series and 90 wins the next season.

Maybe Kenny thought people would forget the good moves he made so he wanted to pull off a bush league one. I hope not. But actually I’d rather think that Kenny was trying to screw over the cubs rather than acquire a free-agent they don’t need when they have needs in so many areas.

Sox fans, be prepared for a possible deal between the Dodgers and the WhiteSOX….Crede and some other stuff for Juan Pierre. But laugh at those who would have you believe the SOX can get both Pierre or Rowand. Pierre wants out of La La land because they signed Jones to play center. He’s not gonna be happy or productive playing left in SOX park. You can say he’s a fit for left at US Cel because of his rag arm but moving your leadoff guy to a new position does not help a team that needs a solid lead-off guy. Juan Pierre is a hard working player who works hard to get his mind right at the plate and on the bases and he is nearing the end of his days as a lead-off man. Next year would not be the time for him to learn a new position, in a new park, in a new league.

Don’t think JP played in the good league before….

Marlins, cubs, Dodgers…someone let me know if I am wrong. Don’t feel like googling the man who gave us the lyrics…

"Then we went to Wrigley Field
I get that wiggly feel"

One of the most embarrassing post World Series celebration moments in recent memory. Juan Pierre free-stylin’ in front of McKeon’s Marlins….

Some stupid shit that.

The other deal that could be made is Konerko to the Angels for the man they call Chone. I’d rather have Chone, he can play more positions, be better in the leadoff role and I think he’s younger than JP.

Again, I’m not interested in googling someone named Chone.

But I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a SOX uniform even if it means saying goodbye to Paulie.

Ike Turner is dead. First Evel Kneivel , now Ike…they say deaths like this happen in threes. I wonder who will be the next wife-beater to croak?

Cameraless

Thanks and much love to the Liar. I got my WILT. I wilt be able to listen to it tonight. OD &I took the crappy car to practice last night so no possibility of a first listen at that time....

Good practice we worked on the Knucklehead song, one other new one & a new cover. We could be making the new bigDrag record as early as next Wed. Wurd.

I don't think I mentioned this the other day but Trace & Riles were out over the weekend. Mylittle niece is so grown up and it is easy to see that she is flourishing. She was so excited to see the snow. Riles & Alex spent an inordinate amount of time playing in our yard, digging up"snow fossils" and putting them in our cooler.

I don't have the heart to tell the kids that their findings are something less than slush fossils now.

On the subjet of nieces, a.k.a. goo - if you're listening, I did not forget to put pictures of the snow on the blog for your little angel. For reasons that I probably shouldn't go into here...we are cameraless. More later.

Time to take the sled out and get my ass to woik.

Preparation, Reinvention

...and maybe therein lies Redemption.

Great Sunday. Fr. Hart continues to refine his message and fit it into our preparation for Advent. He managed to remind us, during a season specifically set aside for preparation, that preparation, awareness and reinvention or changing our minds is our business as Christians.

This season, preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ is at the center of our faith. This is not to say that Catholics are infant worshipers or sitting on the sidelines cheering for the apocalypse and the return of the big bad, ass-kickin' Christ to slay the evils of this world.

These things will happen if we repent, if we change our minds and recognize that the kingdom of God is at hand.

That does not mean swift justice for those we deem to be evildoers.

This means justice done by us.

The Christlike who see the glory of God's creation everywhere...beginning with the humble, the sick, the imprisoned, the downcast - basically the last fucking places we usually see it & then it's up to us to change our minds to see creation as God does and serve the least of these just as God's love gives me, a sinner comfort when life seems to do its worst to me.

We redeem the world by repenting, by changing our minds and if our minds are right we find Christ in the world and bring his message not in the form of judgment of others but the love we display in every act we do.

We see the victim so willingly sacrificed for sin and do not waste that sacrifice on guilt, unworthiness, more darkness...

We do good deeds, we make manifest the love Jesus shows and we close our eyes - seeing those arms stretch between heaven and earth...

And we know what we have to do.

Here.

Now.

Maybe the next time you see me you'll see a small glimpse of the kingdom of God.

Although most people remember me as the man who tried to bring about the Kingdom of Dick Jokes.

As Flanders once said: "Gettin' closer."

Half Day Slow Week

Took a half day on Thursday and got to have lunch @ school with my kid. I met his friends and we ate at the peanut free table. I guess kids will eat there until cruelty against peanuts is no more...

Or the kids want to Free Charles Schultz...

...from death.

Kids are ambitious. That's why we love 'em, right?

I don't know why the Supreme Court is so uptight about Sen. Chuck S's Senate panel proposal (there's got to be a better way to describe it) allowing for television cameras to film/broadcast Supreme Court hearings. Do they have something to hide?

Besides Justice Ginsberg!

I've heard certain justices suggest that cameras would provide too much temptation for political grandstanding.

What? Hello justices, you're in there for life. You ain't runnin' for other offices as far as I'm concerned.

I love to see those berobed bastages sweat a little, is that so wrong?

Probably is, they have important work to do and I haven't written in my blog since Tuesday.

Cold and Getting Colder

So Kenny W. missed out on Cabrera at the winter meetings. I don’t mind that the team I cheer for didn’t get that fat slob. I am worried because the team that got him and Dontrelle “the Rockette” Willis play in the Sox division. Well, Alex will be happy that his Tigers want to win NOW!

What is scary is the Royals could end up with more talent in the field come April if a few things pan out. The latest is they plan to put in a serious bid for Aaron Rowand. The Baseball Zeus suggested if that fails, the Royals might be willing to overspend for Andruw Jones.

Will the Cubs outbid the Padres, Dodgers and others for the services of Fukudome? If they do, I would be temped to make his the only cub jersey I would ever own. Grace & Beck I loved because they were big smokers and guys I would want to sit next to at a bar (they might not want to sit next to me but that’s not even a possibility with Beck unless there’s a bar in beerfart hell…waitaminute, they will have to have a bar in beerfart hell to keep it going and I will make my best effort to hell belly up to the bar with him)

What a bunch of longwinded shit from me! Point is, if the cubs get Fukudome I’ll be Eddie Woo Woo with my Fukudome jersey if for no other reason than the complete absurdity of it all.

Moving the Chains

I’ll keep Part I of my short story up for one more day. I will delete the post but leave your comments because they mean something to me. Thanks. When I post the 2nd part of the story I will include the part already posted with a few minor edits.

Got a little writing done tonight while I helped Alex with his homework and journaling. Writing like this brings back fond memories of piecing together the little dinky dinky tunes for breather during the time when I was stay-at-home dad to a baby. Now my son needs me a lot in the evening as he is starting to have more and more school things to do at home. My wife is the professional educator. We both think it is important for Alex to have the experience of doing schoolwork with someone who is not a teacher but a parent.

It’s important for some weird reason, for me to admit that I write like this. I am not saying “Oh woe is me.” I love my life. Readers of this blog listen to me talk about my writing (your tolerance is appreciated by the way)…but I hope most can see that the process is not one of a serious writer. Serious writers have blocks of time when they toil over sentences. I toil over mine but in between washing dishes, doing bills, pretending to be a cowboy or Alex’s wrestling nemesis – SQUATTO.

No bigDrag practice tonight but it looks like we are going to go on Wed. Can’t wait to rock. Until then I gotta keep moving the chains...but believe it or not, I feel like I am getting where I am supposed to be going.

The Raccoon Part One

January 17, 1931 – Antioch, Illinois

Georgie Schmidt and his brother Ray sat on crates in the cold basement of their parents’ house. Ray closed his eyes and lit a cigarette. Georgie watched the gray smoke curl away from one of the Chesterfields he just gave his brother.

“Do you like those Chesterpains smokes I got you?” Georgie asked.

“Oh yeah,” said Ray, coughing.

Georgie watched the smoke fade into the brown, lumpy walls of the basement. Stealing cigarettes was one of the benefits of being an errand boy for Mr. Einer S. Sometimes Einer’d get so drunk he’d buy a pack of smokes and lose it five minutes later. It never took Georgie Schmidt long to recognize a good situation, and then do something about it.

The thought of smoking the cigarettes himself never occurred to Georgie. They smelled terrible. Ray told him that even though he smoked “forever” he didn’t like the taste of cigarettes until he was at least fifteen. Fifteen was almost year away for Georgie and he didn’t see how a year could change the smell, let alone the taste of those things.

And, Georgie reminded himself from time to time ‘If I start smoking them, that’s more coughing and less money for me.’ The smoke looked fine enough coming off the lit end and disappearing into the shirt of the smoker or the wall of the room or going up and nowhere into the sky. Georgie enjoyed watching the smoke and taking the money. The smokers could keep the smell, the taste, and their coughs.

“You got another pack for me to sell. I’m keeping this one but the kids fishing off Channel Lake are always looking for…” Ray was interrupted by the sound of metal rattling in a dark corner of the basement.

“Damn coon,” said Georgie, “probably chewin’ on what’s left of its hind leg.”

“Well, why don’t you pull its cage into the light once in awhile? Maybe the raccoon wouldn’t fuss so much if he could see.”

“Good idea Ray.” Georgie pulled the cage out the shadows, dragging it under a kerosene lamp hanging in the middle of the basement.

The boys stared at a bloody stump of a bone, hanging where the raccoon’s left hind leg should have been. The thing tried to get out of one of Ray’s traps, one of the homemade traps, one of the good ones. It wasn’t getting out. The animal managed to rip and tear its leg more and that’s about it. Ray was going to drown it as the raccoon seemed determined to chew its leg off completely. It was Georgie who suggested they keep it. Maybe they could figure out a use for a three-legged raccoon.

The boys looked on as the raccoon chewed whatever flesh remained on its left hindquarters.

“Does Eddie S. still want that mangy coon?” Ray asked.

“Yeah,” Georgie laughed.

“What’s he want with a three-legged raccoon?”

“I think,” said Georgie, “he wants to keep it in his garage and charge folks a penny each to see it.”

“And why ain’t you doing that Georgie?”

“Well I am going to try to make a sure dollar, or at least 50 cents selling the coon to Eddie. I figure he won’t find 50 kids that’ll pay a penny to see a three-legged raccoon.”

“Ok, but tell me this. What’s the difference between showing the raccoon yourself for a penny a kid and the other tricks you do for pennies? You know, the stupid stuff like putting the lit matches in your mouth, or the garter snake in the underwear trick…”

“What do you mean Ray?” But Georgie sort of knew what Ray meant. His older brother always got on him about his tricks, especially putting lit matches in his mouth for pennies. Ray would say ‘a boy who won’t smoke cigarettes will put a lit match in his mouth for a penny just doesn’t make sense.’ And it never would to Ray.

“Well,” Ray continued, “why don’t you show the raccoon yourself when you do all those other things for pennies? I mean, don’t you worry that people will get tired of seeing the that junk you do, same as they might not want to see a freak raccoon?”

“Sure Ray, but with the raccoon you have an overhead. I don’t have any overhead for myself, mom and dad take care of that.”

“Huh?” Ray asked.

“Overhead, the overhead for animal acts…you know, pony rides and such. I learned about overhead at Future Farmers with Mr. Garver. You know Mr. Garver Ray.”

“The science teacher,” Ray replied.

“Yeah. Well he tried to get me interested in Future Farmers one of those odd days I was actually in school.”

The boys laughed. Georgie continued, “Anyway Mr. Garver gave me some book on James A. Bailey. So I read the book and Bailey said something to somebody about how much it costs to keep an animal act in business. You got to feed the animal, cage it, make sure it don’t get sick, make sure it don’t hurt the customers…”

“But Georgie, how’s a three-legged raccoon gonna hurt anyone?”

“He might not hurt anyone, but that’s not the point. All that other stuff, it’s too much for me to take care of. Too much of that overhead. There might not be enough coming back to me in such a risky business. That’s why I’m selling it to Eddie.”

“What’s Eddie offering?” Ray asked.

“A nickel.”

“A nickel?” Ray cried.

“Yeah, I told him to go jump in the lake. I told him that a three-legged raccoon is worth at least a dollar,” said Georgie.

“What did he say?”

“Well, you know Eddie. He’s got a short fuse,” Georgie told his brother, “He thinks he’s like Einer and he can bully people into doing what he wants. But Eddie’s just not that scary.”

“For being Einer’s only son, Eddie’s pretty much of a pipsqueak,” Ray said as he nodded and blew smoke straight down. Georgie watched the smoke fan out across his brother’s red-checked shirt.

Georgie continued, “So Eddie says, ‘If you won’t sell the raccoon for a fair price I’ll have to take matters in my own hands’ and I says, ‘What does that mean?’ and he says ‘You’ll see’. So now I’m waiting for him to come back and either offer 50 cents for the coon which is a fair price, or start a fight with me.”

“And if he starts a fight with you…”

“If he starts a fight with me,” Georgie interrupted, “I’ll lick ‘em good. Eddie’s been down to the lake too often, messing with our traps and being generally stupid. I’ll be happy to teach him a lesson.”

“You think he’ll try to steal the raccoon?” Ray asked.

The raccoon stopped gnawing at its bloody stump. It stared through the thin cage wires, black eyes glazed over with pain. It hissed and spit at the boys…

Georgie laughed.

The raccoon began chewing its bloody stump again.
